Discover how I replaced the CPU of my Mac Pro 4.1 from the stock Xeon W3565 with 4 cores, to a newer and more powerful Xeon X5675.

One thing I immediately noticed was that the newer CPU consumes considerably less power while at the same time proving two additional cores.

Not only did that keep my system cooler, e.g. less wattage = less heat, but it also significantly increased my memory bandwidth.

While the Intel W3565 supports a maximum of 24GB of memory, the newer Xeon X5675 is listed as supporting up to 288GB of memory.

In reality, if you upgrade your Mac you will most likely not exceed 64GB or 128GB of memory.

Keep in mind that while both processors support 3 memory channels, the newer X5675 can run your memory modules at the faster speed of 1333MHz.

If we multiply @1066MHz 8,5x3 we get a maximum of about 25,5GB/s, in comparison using the newer CPU we get @1333MHz 10,6x3 = 31,8 GB/s.

Note that there are several upgrade options when it comes to changing the CPU in your Mac Pro 4.1, my recommendation is to look at the list in this post:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-cpu-compatibility-list.1954766/

My recommendation is to pick a CPU that supports the 1333RAM, and while the fastest model appears to be the X5690, it also draws more power and therefore produces more heat.

Also, the 3.46GHz X5690 often comes at a premium price, that is why I picked the cheaper and more energy efficient X5675.

Performance wise it gets a "Geekbench Score of 13.967" using the Intel X5675, in comparison, other people such as “Vtudio” have reported a "Geekbench Score of 14.553" using the top of the line X5690.

Overall, I am very happy with my old Mac Pro, switching out some of the components really made a night and day difference in performance.

Even if you keep the old stock CPU, and just change the memory and graphics card, the performance increase should be very noticeable.

If we keep in mind that this system is from early 2009, and sometimes available for $400 on eBay, for a total of $580 you get a very nice budget system.

In my case, I added the SATA III card ($60), and 1TB SSD $200) on top, which increased the cost to $840.

Basically, I spend half of my money on the used Mac Pro, and the other half on upgrades.

But it is so much faster than my old iMac, and if my SSD ever runs full, I just put in one of these hard disk drives and backup the data.

In conclusion, the old Mac Pros are super versatile, even after 9 years, which I think is amazing.
